A Notary Public is appointed by the Supreme Court and charge fees for their services. Notary Publics in Brisbane are free to set their own fees. Do I need a Notary Public?

Since Notary Publics are lawyers and charge a fee for their service, consider whether you need a Notary Public or whether you can have your document Apostilled or Authenticated by DFAT without Notarisation. Most Australian government issued documents with a signature or seal do not need to be Notarised by a Notary Public before being accepted by DFAT for Apostille or Authentication. They can be accepted by DFAT for Apostille or Authentication without Notarisation.

What if my document is not one of the above documents?

If your document is not one of the above documents and you require the document to be stamped with an Apostille or Authentication by DFAT, then the document must be Notarised by an Australian Notary Public first. Please note that the document must be Notarised by an Australian Notary Public. A Justice of the Peace (JP) is not authorised to certify documents for use overseas and a document certified by a JP is not accepted by DFAT for Apostille or Authentication.
